UAE Corporate Tax Return: Documents You Should Keep Ready Before Filing

UAE Corporate Tax Compliance | Business Tax Guide | OPAB

Is your business ready to file its UAE Corporate Tax Return?

Corporate Tax compliance in the UAE involves more than calculating taxable profits. Businesses must maintain accurate financial records, supporting documents, and tax schedules to ensure correct reporting to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA).

Whether you operate a mainland company, Free Zone business, or small enterprise, preparing your documents early can help prevent filing errors, unnecessary penalties, and last-minute compliance issues.

1. Essential Documents for UAE Corporate Tax Filing

Before preparing your Corporate Tax Return, make sure the following documents are available:

Document

Why You Need It

Trade Licence

Confirms business registration and legal activities

Corporate Tax Registration Certificate

Provides your Tax Registration Number (TRN)

Financial Statements

Establishes accounting profit as the starting point for tax calculations

Trial Balance & General Ledger

Supports financial balances and transactions

Bank Statements & Reconciliations

Helps verify cash movements and bank balances

Sales Invoices & Revenue Records

Supports declared business income

Supplier Invoices & Expense Receipts

Substantiates deductible business expenses

Fixed Asset & Depreciation Schedule

Supports depreciation and relevant tax adjustments

Payroll & Salary Records

Supports employee compensation and related expenses

Related Party & Connected Person Records

Supports disclosure and arm’s-length compliance

Previous Tax Returns & Tax Loss Schedules

Supports carried-forward balances and applicable tax relief

2. Review Your Financial Statements

Your financial statements are essential when preparing your Corporate Tax Return.

Businesses should ensure their Profit and Loss Statement, Balance Sheet, and supporting schedules are accurate and consistent with their accounting records.

Pay particular attention to personal expenses, non-deductible costs, related-party transactions, and differences between accounting profit and taxable income.

3. Check Your Corporate Tax Eligibility

Before filing, determine whether your business qualifies for any applicable tax relief or special treatment.

This may include:

  • Small Business Relief (SBR): Available to eligible UAE resident taxable persons meeting the relevant conditions, including the AED 3 million revenue threshold.

  • Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP): Eligible Free Zone businesses may benefit from a 0% rate on Qualifying Income, subject to strict conditions.

  • Tax Loss Relief: Eligible businesses may carry forward qualifying tax losses, subject to applicable restrictions.

Remember: A company with no taxable profit may still be required to submit a Corporate Tax Return.

4. Know Your Corporate Tax Filing Deadline

Generally, UAE Corporate Tax Returns must be filed, and any Corporate Tax due paid, within nine months after the end of the relevant Tax Period.

For example, a company with a financial year ending 31 December 2026 will generally have until 30 September 2027 to file and pay, unless a special deadline applies.

5. How Long Should You Keep Corporate Tax Records?

The FTA requires relevant Corporate Tax records and supporting documents to be retained for at least seven years after the end of the relevant Tax Period.

Not every supporting document must be uploaded with the return. However, businesses must maintain records that substantiate their reported information and make them available when required.

6. Avoid These Common Corporate Tax Filing Mistakes

  • Filing without reconciling bank accounts and financial statements.

  • Claiming expenses without adequate supporting documents.

  • Overlooking related-party and connected-person transactions.

  • Assuming that Free Zone companies automatically qualify for 0% Corporate Tax.

  • Failing to submit a return because the business has no profit.

  • Missing the applicable filing deadline.
